Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Brinlee's first Christmas was not quite what I was hoping for, but we had a decent one. My mom and step-dad came to town Christmas Eve and left Christmas Day, and Jared's mom and sister spent Christmas Day with us. We all went to the Christmas Eve service together, and Brinlee did GREAT! She sat with us, and was content just looking around at everyone and listening to the music. She started getting tired, but found my scarf and proceeded to suck on that to keep herself happy. I was so proud of her!

Everyone was supposed to be at our house at 10:00 so we could eat breakfast, then open presents and then do lunch. We got up around 8:00, fed Brinlee, got ourselves ready and started breakfast. By 9:30, B was getting tired so I put her back down. Mom and Russ got to our house around 10:00, and since Sue and Kiley were running late, we went ahead and ate. Brinlee woke up around 10:30 or so and was really fussy. I changed her and attempted to feed her, which was a battle. She would cry and then eat, cry and then eat. She was really fussy and crying until I put her back down at 12:15. At that point, she had worn me out!! By this time, Sue and Kiley had shown up, so we ate lunch and then opened presents, and since B was still asleep, we would just open her presents later. We had fun opening presents and got lots of goodies!! I just hated that Brinlee was missing it. She finally woke up again around 2:15 and wouldn't stop crying. We tried to feed her again, and she would scream any time the bottle got near her. I finally called the pediatrician on-call, and wouldn't you know, it happened to be the doctor who had blown me off before!! I told him what was going on, and he said that I needed to get Brinlee to the ER immediately, that there was nothing he could do. So Jared and I loaded her up and off to the hospital we went! We finally got back to a room, and had to try and keep her occupied so she wouldn't cry. It was hurting me to see her in pain.....you could just see it on her face and hear it in her cry! Finally, the doctor came in to see us. My first thought was, "Can we please see someone who's not fresh out of med school, and who at least looks like he's gone through puberty?!?" Doogie Houser (sp?) was our doctor, I swear. Anyway, he determined that Brinlee had an ear infection and put her on amoxicillan. On a side note, the funniest part about being in the ER that day was the lady and her daughter in the room caddy-corner to us. We could hear her talking to the doctor trying to get meds with codine or "something stronger" for her and her daughter, who was in her teens and had a sinus infection. The lady herself was rather large and came in with foot pain and her overnight bag already packed. It was sad and almost comical to hear her trying to work the doctor and nurses, and using her daughter. Poor thing....what a way to spend Christmas!

Anyway, it was about 5:30 or so when we got released, and we had to get her prescription filled. By the time we got home, it was after 6:00, and had been over 10 hours since Brinlee had eaten. Thankfully, she had been given Tylenol at the hospital, so it had some time to kick in. We tried to feed her again, and she was starving!! We decided to let her eat until she was full since it had been so long. She normally eats about 5-5.5 ounces, and she ate 7 ounces that night!! Poor baby was hungry!

By Monday, she was doing much better and we were able to open her presents that night. She got some clothes, lots of books, toys, hair bows (for when she finally gets hair!), one of those stuffed animal pillows (a super cute zebra!), and other fun things that aren't coming to mind at the moment. My dad and step-mom got her some blocks that you can connect somehow, and Jared immediately opened them and started playing. Guess he's a little kid at heart!!

We had a follow up appointment that Wednesday, and Dr. Owens said her ears looked great, even though she was pulling on her other ear. He said you would've never known that she was sick!!

Fast forward to New Year's Day.....Brinlee wakes up around 7:00 and I always kiss her head when she gets up. She always feels hot to me, but she felt extra hot that morning. I took her temp and it was 100.7. Keep in mind she's been on antibiotics almost 10 days at this point. I couldn't figure out why she would have a fever, but we decided to give her some Tylenol and just monitor her. She wasn't fussy or anything, but you could just tell she didn't feel good and had the "fever eyes". Her fever dropped to 99+, only to go back up again to 100+. This went on all day! The Tylenol wasn't really helping, but her fever never really got high enough to call the doctor. Jared went out to the deer lease that night (his first time all season!), so I was home by myself with Brinlee. I figured we would be fine, and wasn't too concerned about him leaving us. I gave her a bath that night hoping to get her fever down, but that didn't help at all. When I got her ready for bed, I checked her temp again, and it was back up to 100.5. I gave her some more Tylenol, fed her, and put her down. I checked her temp around 11:45 right before I went to bed, just to see how she was doing. hoping her fever had broken and I would be able to get some sleep, too. I was wrong....her temp was now 101.3!! From everything I had read, for her age I needed to call the doctor when her temp got to 101.4. Here it is almost midnight, I'm home by myself, and her temp has gotten higher. I was freaking out!! I texted Sue to see if she was still up, and thank God she still was. She told me to wake her up and give her more Tylenol, and check her every 2 hours after that. So I woke her, and fed her again and gave her some Tylenol. She felt like she was on fire. I felt so bad for her! By the time I was ready for bed again, it was 1:45 and I checked her temp just before I laid down. It had broken!! She was down to 98+. I still woke up every 2 hours and checked her, but her fever never came back.

I called the doctor first thing that morning to get her in since she had had a fever for over 18 hours. When we went in, he said that her ears were still clear, but that she probably had a cold on the tail end of the cold she was getting over. Seriously?? My poor baby had been in daycare 3 weeks, and had already been to the doctor twice. Not a good track record so far. He also said that I could expect her to get a fever off and on over the next few days. Great....

And sure enough, he was right! Her fever came back that night, back up to 100.7. Except this time, Tylenol did nothing to it. With daycare, she has to be fever free for 24 hours, so I was going to have to stay home with her the next day. Not good timing!!! I had end of month / end of year that day, and absolutely needed to be at work that day. Thankfully, my sister-in-law, Morgan, didn't have to be at work at B's daycare until 11:00 so she came over to watch her that morning so I could get some stuff done, and then I could bring work home. Talk about a lifesaver!!

Brinlee did good all day, but ran fever again Tuesday night for a few hours. She's been fever free ever since!! She's still coughing quite a bit, and is coughing stuff up, but she's a happy baby and is doing great!! I'm not a fan of my baby being sick and not being able to do anything for her. It breaks my heart!! I cried a couple of times even. Guess that's all part of being a mom!!

Here's a picture of Brinlee the day before Christmas Eve. How cute is she?!?
(still can't figure out why it's turned, and how to turn it around??)
